About
Since end of May 2007 I’ve been teaching full time in Tongyeong, South Korea. My background ranges from the performing arts to multi-media production. The decision to teach english full time in a foreign country came about quite suddenly, well, within three days of quitting a singing waitress job. I’d been living in San Francisco struggling to find work that would act as a base for my real work..creating performance art works.
After working as a somewhat established artist in Germany for 11 years, it was indeed a struggle. Returning back to the U.S. in 2004 had it positive points. I went back to college, recieved a B.A. in Experimental Performance from New College of California, then went on to the U.K. for post graduate studies in Interactive Digital Performance (triggering digital systems for performing artists), then back to San Francisco with the intention to find work teaching performance and get back to creative projects. I rejoined Actor’s Equity union, went on auditions, searched for bands to work with, shot/edited video, performed and landed a job as a singing waitress at Max’s Opera Cafe. At Max’s, I was able to get my vocal chops back and work with Musical Theatre and Jazz pianists as well as many talented young singers, a constructive and positive experience. However, without a fixed schedule at Max’s it was impossible to put creative plans in action. ESL seemed to come out of the blue while surfing the net for answers…
Now, in Korea, I have space, time, and peace having found work that I enjoy. I’ve found ways to incorporate performance into ESL teaching and am checking out possibilities to start a band. I’ve sat in with a Korean Jazz band “Bop” twice in Busan and sang at the Hansan Battle Festival with a big band…
Korea seems to have an air of rawness, of possibility, it’s dynamic, and I really like it here..
